The American Pickle Barrel has never been so eclipsed with caterwauling talk such as the conversations, point-counter-point and arguments that are being made today. I have always seen myself as one that is well informed with the nuances of the news being portrayed by the media, real or fake. As I sat down to write this column over these past few days, I had no intention of writing about the ludicrous, outrageous, disgraceful character assassination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh. It was my intention to convey my observations of the electorates’ opinions I have observed here in red state America on the so-called and expected “Blue Wave” in November.  (Not going to happen.)

Like many Americans here in “Fly Over” country we expected the level of discourse and the circus show that we saw being played out on TV, cable, and what little print is left, that was right out of the Democratic Alinsky playbook. I have learned not to underestimate the level of insight Americans have here. They did not let me down in the conversations I heard and observed in 5 states (WV, KY, OH, NC and SC) on the Kavanaugh hearings. When it looked like the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearings seemingly were at an end (and in reality, they did come to an end), Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) pulls out the “Hail Mary of all Hell Mary’s” plays. NO, I did not misspell the second “Hell Mary” reference. I am not going to recap what we all at this point know that has contemptuously and distressfully unfolded by committee democrats, the media, Ms. Ford, Ms. Ramirez, and even Stormy Michael Avenatti.

One of the more popular “Pickle Barrel” bailiwick venues in Appalachia is “Tudor’s Biscuit World”, a great place for biscuits and gravy and coffee. You will find a lot of old timers sitting around tables, reading the news with the latest news being played on the TV, sipping coffee, discussing today’s events, and remembering the glory days of old. They are mostly old conservative democrats (yes, they still exist) who now vote republican because they no longer ideologically identify with the modern liberal Democrat party. I listened to them about the Kavanaugh hearings and found I had little to offer because they had intense insights that came along with a lifetime of rural political experience.

As the committee hearings progressed, the circus show of protesters and Spartacus moments were met with remarks of “Oh well. Typical” and “What do you expect by liberals”. The remarks ranged from “Ho Hum” in all regards. They expected, and rightly so, that Judge Kavanaugh represented himself well and was cruising for confirmation. They, the people, want a conservative Supreme Court. Then they watched as democrats checked off all their ploys of Alinsky self-destruction: 1. Cry transparency. 2. Question his credibility. 3. Call him racist. 4. Call him sexist. Nothing stuck…enter the “Hell Mary” play. The mood changed perceptibly so! The people went from “Ho Hum” to anger and frustration. There was a palatable increase in energy for voting in the coming mid-term elections. As unsubstantiated accusers came forth and witness after witness claimed no knowledge of or offer any collaboration of the so-called “victims’” disgraceful charges, the mood of the American red state voter became more and more invigorated. They see right through this and the reason will surprise you if you live in blue state America and are one of the coastal elites.

These “Old Timers”, both women and men, have raised families and their families have raised or are raising families. Domestic violence and sexual abuse have touched them in some way. It’s personal! They have in one way or another experienced unsubstantiated charges of domestic violence or sexual abuse or experienced substantiated and real domestic violence and sexual abuse. They know firsthand the consequences and pain of enduring these horrible events, real or not. To them, it’s about pain and inflicting blemishes on one’s character for life, accuser or accused. To play political football and use the issue of domestic violence and sexual abuse for political gain is reprehensible and those who do so are to be held in self-contempt.  It’s not about being republican or democrat. They don’t care about that. If your charges are substantiated, they will be the first to cross political lines and pile on with you. The “old timer” women love their men! Their men are husbands, sons, brothers, uncles, grandfathers, great-grandfathers, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They want the best for them. They can’t make a living if accused unjustly. To accuse any one of these loved ones with unsubstantiated charges has real world consequences to their very lives. It takes away from real victims who need credibility.

Simply put: these old timers and most of us whippersnappers (look it up) see right through this. As of today, not one witness substantiates these charges. Rural justice is not blind!
