Remember how Mark Zuckerberg stood in front of Congress and said Facebook is fair and doesn’t discriminate against Conservatives?
Ha. I remember that smug face lying as well.
Facebook’s new thing isn’t just attacking those who “violate terms” (a completely arbitrary and loose definition). They are now going after everyone who has anything to do with it.
It’s a page straight out of McCarthyism.
Allow me to explain.
As the CEO of a marketing agency, my personal Facebook account has “admin” access on the accounts for hundreds of different businesses that we work with.
I rarely have anything to do with the accounts, but it provides a safeguard in case our clients and my staff for whatever reason were to be locked out of the Facebook business pages.
So imagine my surprise when I was put in what we lovingly refer to as “Facebook jail” because of an alleged violation of one of our clients… despite having literally never even touched the account.
Here’s the story. Jody’s Meat is one of the fastest growing beef jerky companies in America. They also happen to be extremely conservative, regularly posting memes and articles that don’t sit well with liberals.
Those easily offended liberals decided to mass report Jody’s Meat for everything… offensive or not.
But it was apparently the logo that sealed the deal and got Jody’s Meat shut down. Ready to see the “offensive post”?
Upon logging into Facebook, I got this notification. “This post goes against our Community Standards”. And so I was put in Facebook jail for three days.
Now it’s important to point out two things.
The first is the obvious: there’s nothing wrong with this logo. It’s a freaking logo.
The second thing I need to point out is that I didn’t post the logo. I’m simply an admin on the page. Turns out EVERY PERSON with any kind of admin access on the page – whether or not they’ve ever even engaged with the page – was punished.
I called my client right away and explained what happened. He told me he’d immediately remove me as an admin so it didn’t run the risk of impacting our business.
Turns out he couldn’t, because the post was apparently so offensive that the entire page was shut down.
I reached out to our ad rep for Facebook. We spend millions of dollars a year on advertising on the platform, and so we’re fortunate enough to have a direct line with them. They’re apparently “expediting” my removal from Facebook jail.
My question is this: what about the countless businesses who don’t spend millions of dollars a year and don’t have that direct pipeline? What happens to THEM when McCarthy strikes? And when is enough enough?
